New Transcona Library Coming Soon
With Growth in Transcona happening at an unparalleled pace, the new library, slated to start construction in Spring of 2017 and completion being in 2018, the timing has never been better.
And thanks to the feedback received by residents at two Open Houses, the new building features a stunning new roof line while maintaining a unique pillar-free floor plan (old design in small photo, new design in big photo).
To be located on the corner of Plessis Road and Transcona Boulevard, accessibility is key to the new library. A bus stop is on the corner the planned Active Transportation Trail zipping right by the front of the building and connecting to the Transcona Trail. The number of parking stalls has also been increased as a result of feedback received at the Open Houses. The building also features a single-floor design which will make accessing the building easier for users of all ages.
The new library will be 13,500 square feet, a significant increase in size from the current 7,600 square foot library; plenty of room to house our 40,000 item collection and added floor space for improved study and leisure areas. Improvements include tutorial rooms for those looking for a quieter place to study and a family literacy playground for the little ones. Also included in the plans is a multi-purpose programming room which will continue to provide a space for the many free programs the Transcona Library offers every year to people of all ages.
When the nice weather arrives people can enjoy their books and magazines in the outdoor reading area. And when the white stuff starts falling, the long glass walls on either side of the building will help to ensure that everyone has a seat by the window.
